The Hindu Editorial Vocabulary (A fine line) 30 August, 2021

  1. A fine line (phrase) – a subtle/delicate difference.
  2. Conservation (noun) – preservation, protection, careful management (of the natural resources).
  3. Eco-conservation (noun) – environmental conservation; it is a practice that paves the way for protecting the environment and natural resources on the individual, organisational as well as governmental levels.
  4. Hand-in-hand (phrase) – together, in close association, concurrently, closely.
  5. Rub up against (phrasal verb) – come in conflict with, in disagreement with, opposed to.
  6. Ecological (adjective) – environment-friendly, eco-friendly, natural.
  7. Pose (verb) – constitute, present, create, cause (a problem or danger or risk).
  8. Envisage (verb) – expect, intend, propose, envision, contemplate.
  9. Hydroelectric (adjective) – relating to hydel power project that uses energy stored in water to produce electricity.
  10. The way forward (phrase) – something (a plan/action) that leads to success in the future.
  11. Premise on (verb) – base something on.
  12. Undulating (adjective) – having a continuous up and down form/shape (like a wave).
  13. Topography (noun) – environment, terrain, landscape.
  14. Landslip (noun) – another name for landslide, mudslide, earthfall.
  15. Avalanche (noun) – sudden arrival or happening of something (in very large quantities) at the same time; snow slide, snow slip, landslide, landslip, flood, deluge, torrent.
  16. Have a bearing on (phrase) – have a relevance/relation to something.
  17. Terrain (noun) – land, ground; landscape, topography.
  18. Prone to (adjective) – susceptible, vulnerable, liable, subject; likely to have, at risk of.
  19. Aftermath (noun) – consequences, after-effects, repercussions; end result, outcome.
  20. In the aftermath of (phrase) – in the wake of, s a consequence of, as a result of.
  21. Devastating (adjective) – damaging; destructive, ruinous, disastrous.
  22. Basin (noun) – the portion of land (geographical area) drained by a river and its tributaries (branch rivers). The states which are drained by a river and its tributaries are basin states. (drain simply means “flow” of water/any other liquid).
  23. Exacerbate (verb) – intensify, increase, heighten, aggravate, worsen, compound.
  24. Considerable (adjective) – substantial, significant; much, a lot of.
  25. Friction (noun) – discord, strife, conflict, disagreement.
  26. Unimpeded (adjective) – unrestricted, unblocked, unlimited.
  27. Scrap (verb) – abandon, drop, abolish, withdraw.
  28. Proponent (noun) – advocate, supporter, upholder/promoter.
  29. Entail (verb) – cause bring about, produce, result in.
  30. Walk a fine line (phrase) – strike a balance; find a fair & reasonable line of action between two contrasting things.
  31. Salvage (verb) – recover, regain, restore, reclaim, get back, retrieve.
  32. Acknowledge (verb) – accept, recognize, realize.
  33. On paper (phrase) – in theory, theoretically, supposedly.
  34. Division (noun) – disunity, disagreement, difference.
  35. Root for (verb) – support, back, uphold.
  36. Cessation (noun) – termination, discontinuation, suspension.
  37. Be affiliated to (verb) – associate with, connect with, belonging to.
  38. Fraught (adjective) – worried, anxious, troubled, distressed, panic-stricken (and with many problems).
  39. Tussle (noun) – fight, clash, quarrel, argument, contention.
  40. Inadequately (adverb) – unsatisfactorily.
  41. Account for (phrasal verb) – constitute, make up, comprise, form, represent.
  42. Keen on (adjective) – enthusiastic about, interested in, passionate about, fascinated by.
  43. Go ahead (verb) – proceed.
  44. Sunk cost (noun) – something committed and that cannot be recovered. (it also known as retrospective cost; it mainly refers to money that has been spent or committed and cannot be recovered).
  45. Affidavit (noun) – sworn statement, self-attestation, self-declaration.
  46. Indeed (adverb) – in fact, actually, undeniably.
  47. Lasting (adjective) – long-lasting, long-term, permanent, indelible.
  48. Immune (from) (adjective) – protected (from); exempt (from); free from, not liable to, not subject to.
  49. Reliable (adjective) – acceptable, trustworthy, dependable.
  50. Along with (phrase) – together with.
  51. Constraint (noun) – restriction, limitation, restraint.
